The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) is pleased to announce the Howard G. Buffett Funds for Women Journalists for the academic year 2022/2023 in an effort to broaden its support of women and nonbinary journalists in the United States.

By supporting grantees, such as educational opportunities, investigative reporting, and media development efforts, the fund was created to assist female journalists. IWMF will provide funds totaling $230,000 annually to assist female and nonbinary journalists in their work.

The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF), based in Washington, D.C., is a group that promotes the position of women in the media on a global scale. The IWMF has developed initiatives to assist women in media in finding workable answers to the challenges they encounter in their jobs and personal lives.

The work of the IWMF encompasses a wide range of initiatives, such as the Lifetime Achievement, Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism, and International Reporting Fellowships in Africa and Latin America, as well as grant opportunities for female journalists and research into the status of women in the media.

The IWMF promotes press freedom globally and frequently creates petitions requesting that international governments liberate journalists held captive and provide safety for journalists in peril.

In order to celebrate the IWMF twentieth anniversary and consider the state of women in the media, the organisation hosted a worldwide conference of women leaders in March 2011 at George Washington University.

A report titled Global Report on the Status of Women in the News Media was released by the IWMF in 2011.

Eligibility

  • The Howard G. Buffett Fund for Women Journalists is open to women and nonbinary journalists of any nationality.
  • Journalism must be the applicant’s primary profession.
  • Applicants must have at least one year of professional journalism experience with a track record of publishing in non-student outlets.
  • We accept applications from teams of journalists; however, the application must be led and submitted by a woman or nonbinary journalist, and the team must include at least 50% women.
  • Due to staff capacity, applications are only accepted in English (preferred) or Spanish, but reporting may be published in any language.
