International students can apply for IDS Graduate Scholarships 2022-2023, IDS fully funded scholarships. These scholarships are for master’s students. The scholarship pays up to £18,500 in tuition and up to £11,000 in living expenses.

The Institute of Development Studies (IDS) is pleased to announce that at least one scholarship will be available to enable high-achieving scholars from the Global South to study a master’s degree beginning in 2021.

The Allan and Nesta Ferguson Charitable Trust and the Dr Purna Chander Kotagiri Fund are two exceptional fenders who finance IDS Graduate Scholarships.

International students from low- and lower-middle-income countries who have accepted a full-time position on an IDS master’s degree are eligible for these scholarships. Female students from Africa or Asia will be given preference for one scholarship. All IDS Graduate scholarships will be offered to individuals with the highest potential to make a difference in their home countries following degree.

Interesting Facts About The Institute of Development Studies (IDS)

The Institute of Development Studies (IDS) is a think tank situated in Farmer, East Sussex, and linked with the University of Sussex. It does research and teaches in the teaching of development studies, for which it and its partner, the University of Sussex, were ranked #1 in the world in the QS World University Rankings in 2021. In the 2019 Global Go To Think Tank Index Report, IDS was named the number one international development think tank.

Dudley Seers, an economist, founded IDS in 1966 and served as its director from 1967 to 1972. Sir Richard Jolly was the director of IDS from 1972 to 1981, and he later wrote A short history of IDS: a personal comment. From 1987 to 1997, John Toye was the director of IDS.

Melissa Leach, a social anthropologist and professorial fellow at IDS, is the current director of IDS, having taken over from Lawrence Haddad in 2014. She was the director of the STEPS Center prior to her appointment. Recent research by Leach has focused on the politics of science and knowledge in environmental and health policy processes, as well as the cultural and political components of vaccine administration, medical research trials, emerging infectious illnesses, and ecology-health connections.

Eligibility Criteria for IDS Graduate Scholarships

To qualify for IDS Graduate Scholarships, candidate must fulfill all of the following requirements below:

  • Required Language(s): English
  • Eligible Countries: International students from low or middle-income countries
  • Must have proven academic skills and an established career with a track record of excellence and achievement in the field of development
  • Must be able to demonstrate, through your previous experience and future plans, that you are committed to working for development – be it educational, economic, social or cultural – in your home country
  • Must not have studied nor worked in a high-income (developed) country
  • Must meet all of IDS and the University of Sussex’s general entrance requirements.
  • Must have received an unconditional offer on a full-time taught IDS master’s degree (see our list of IDS master’s courses) by 30 April 2021 (it is possible to apply for the scholarship before receiving an offer of a place).

How to Apply for IDS Graduate Scholarships

Please follow the following application instructions to apply for IDS Graduate Scholarships:

  1. Applications for the scholarship award should be submitted via IDS online portal IDS Scholarship Application Form.
  2. In fairness to other applicants, we are unable to consider applications from candidates who have not already secured sufficient funds to meet the remaining tuition and living expenses at the time of application (after taking account of the possible award of this Scholarship) and you must provide evidence of how you will fund your expenses.
  3. The closing date for receipt of scholarship applications is 30 April 2022.
  4. Your application will be reviewed and successful candidates may be called for an interview (by phone, Zoom or Microsoft Teams). Once an award has been approved, the candidate will be notified in writing by 31 July 2022.  Please note that you should not make irreversible plans to leave for the UK until you have received a formal offer letter for the scholarship.
