Cork is home to University College Cork, a component university of the National University of Ireland. In 1845, it was founded as one of three Queen’s Colleges in Belfast, Cork, and Galway. It was renamed University College, Cork, after the Irish Universities Act of 1908. The Universities Act of 1997 renamed the university National University of Ireland, Cork, and a Ministerial Order of 1998 renamed it University College Cork – National University of Ireland, Cork, but it is still generally known as University College Cork.

The Sunday Times has named the university Irish University of the Year five times, the most recent being in 2017. In 2015, the European Commission-funded U-Multirank system named UCC the best performing institution, based on getting the most “A” marks (21 out of 28 categories) among 1200 institutions that took part.
