The University of Basel, Department of Environmental Sciences is accepting applications for PhD Scholarships in Organic Geochemistry and Paleolimnology. For the academic year 2022/2023, the university is accepting applications.

This PhD project will use novel proxies based on algal lipid biomarkers and their stable isotopic composition to track changes in algal biodiversity induced by natural variability and human activities, with an emphasis on the environmental implications of ancient Roman towns.

Eligibility

  • Eligible Countries: All nationalities.
  • Eligible Course or Subjects: PhD degree in Environmental Science, Geochemistry, Organic Chemistry and Organic Geochemistry and Paleolimnology.
  • Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following criteria:
  • Candidates should have a solid background and interest in (paleo-) limnology and biogeochemistry in aquatic systems. Experience with stable isotope or organic chemistry laboratory techniques will be an advantage given the laboratory focus of this PhD-project. The ability to work independently and within a team and good communication skills, including fluency in English, is essential.

Benefits

The University of Basel will provide the salary for applicants. The PhD project will be part of a research project funded for four years by the Swiss National Science Foundation.
